Founder's Day: Happy Birthday to I.L. 'Tommy' Tucker

We proudly wish I.L. 'Tommy' Tucker a Happy Birthday, this 9Th day of May, 2011. For many who know Tommy, it is just another day in the life of a 39 year-old, though Tommy Tucker shares the same age with Penn State football coach Joe Paterno.

Tommy likely will share the day with his daughter, since his wife has a busy day on the putting green and playing bridge with her girl friends. Talking to Tommy this morning, we were talking about today's news items and the changes going on in the Cedar Rapids community.

Tommy graduated from McKinley High School in Cedar Rapids and attended Coe College, where he met his wife, LaVerne, of 62 years. Tommy was at Great Lakes in the U.S. Navy, when the first bomb was dropped in Japan.

Tommy began in business in 1940s with his father, I.L. 'Irv" Tucker with Tucker Manufacturing Co., Inc. The business remains in service today in Cedar Rapids, sharing the location of Tommy Tucker Realty Co.

In 1955, Tommy left working with his father full-time to begin a career in the Real Estate industry. In 1958, Tommy founded Tommy Tucker Realty Co. In 1964, Tommy joined Irv as a member of Rotary International and continues in membership. He is a Paul Harris Fellow. In 1988, Robin Tucker joined his father Tommy in business. In 1989, Tommy asked Robin, his youngest son, to join Rotary International, as a member of Rotary Club of Cedar Rapids.

Tommy has served the Real Estate industry at a variety of levels, as former President of both the Cedar Rapids Area Association of Realtors and Iowa Association of Realtors. He served the National Association of Realtors, as a regional vice president for five states and as a board member, serving on a variety of committees. He helped in the founding of Real Estate Department at the University of Northern Iowa, among his many accomplishments over the years. Locally, he was a founding commissioner of the Cedar Rapids Civil Rights Commissioner, serving 31 years. He was very active in a variety of community activities over the length of his business career paying his civic rent.

Today, Tommy Tucker Realty Co. serves a variety of residents in the Cedar Rapids area.

Hello and Happy New Year: Real Estate, Resolutions and one big bowl game this week!

We We want to welcome you to Tommy Tucker Realty Co., Realtors® of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and our blog in 2010 ...

Our company was founded by IL 'Tommy' Tucker in 1958. Tommy has achieved Realtor® Emeritus status with the National Association of Realtors. We had the pleasure to speak with Vicki Cox Golder, 2010 NAR President, recently about a nice visit Ms. Golder had with Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa at the most recent NAR Convention.

Tommy has always been very community oriented, active at the local, State and Federal level in industry and as a Rotarian has always practiced the principal of "Service Above Self."

Senator Grassley told a story about his 1980 campaign. At the time, Chuck didn't know that Vicki already knew Tommy. It was nice to hear about the story from both Tommy and Vicki's points of view. It is a small world.

Robin Tucker, Tommy's youngest son, had the pleasure of joining his father in business in 1988. Robin worked a year and half in public accounting, before returning to Cedar Rapids 22 years ago to become controller for Tommy. Robin became licensed in real estate and today is the Broker/Officer for Tommy Tucker Realty and a Realtor. Robin is a third generation member of the Rotary Club of Cedar Rapids, following his father and his paternal grandfather.

We want to invite you to contact us in 2010 to discuss your real estate and property management needs. Feel free to visit our web site at http://www.ttrco.com/ or search for properties for sale on the MLS. If you are looking for a Rental House in the Cedar Rapids area, click here.

We want to wish you a Happy New Year and wish you the very best in 2010.

On Tuesday, many throughout the State of Iowa, will turn into the 2010 FedEx Orange Bowl from Miami, Florida. The Iowa Hawkeyes (10-2 in 2009) will seek their first BCS bowl win, after two Rose Bowl wins and ten other bowl victories in the program's history. Robin and Tommy were at the 2003 Orange Bowl, when USC beat Iowa 38-17, after a sluggish 10-10 game at halftime for the Hawkeyes.

Publisher Phil Steele had this to say about Iowa's opponent, Georgia Tech (10-2, ACC champion in 2009) in the preseason...

"Tech showed last year that they could play with anyone knocking off three
ranked teams and that was the first year of HC Paul Johnson's (offensive, etc.)
systems. They have 18 starters back and will have one of the top offenses
in the FBS."
- Phil Steele
Further, we want to say congratulations to the Iowa State Cyclones (7-6 in 2009), who won the 2009 Insight.com Bowl, when they defeated the Minnesota Golden Gophers 14-13 on New Year's Eve, to pick up their first bowl win, since the 2000 Insight.com Bowl win over Pitt.

Finally, what are your housing resolutions in 2010?
