A Realtor® member is a member of the Historic Preservation
Commission (an advisory commission to the City of Cedar Rapids). They have
been discussing the fact that many homeowners and Realtors® are not aware that certain homes are part of a designated historic district with design standards
in place (which are primarily in place to help homes in the area retain value).
Essentially, because there are design standards in
place, this means that before work can begin on certain types of exterior
improvements, the homeowner must first submit a one page form located at http://cedar-rapids.org/development/documents/preservation/Hist%20Dist%20Application.pdf
explaining the scope of work to be completed, to the commission for
In an effort to provide improved communication to the
public, the City of Cedar Rapids and the Historic Preservation Commission have
now included information on the city assessor site (http://www.cedar-rapids.org/assessor/pmc/)
as to whether or not a home is part of a designated historic district. In
other words, when searching for a home on the assessor’s site, if it is in a
historic district, it will be noted on the screen near the address of the
property. Below is an example.

Plenty of discussion on local and state legislative issues today, including a one percent local option sales tax proposal that the City of Cedar Rapids and the Cedar Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce are working on this week for a possible vote on March 3Rd vote this year.
Plans are in the works for the March 24Th bus visit to Des Monies to visit with our legislators and visit the State Capitol. The Cedar Rapids Association and statewide members of Iowa Association of Realtors plan an annual visit the Hill each year.

We will be conducting a city inspection today. Our community does require registration of rental properties and maintains an inspection process. An example of Cedar Rapids rental housing inspection overview is available online.
We will be resuming showing of 390 S 11 Street in Marion, after some kitchen updates have been completed, including a new dishwasher and counter tops.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration at St. Paul's' promises to be another inspiring program filled with music, an outstanding speaker from the local community, and the presentation of the Percy and Lileah Harris "Who is My Neighbor Award". The 10Th annual award will be presented during the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration at St. Paul’s UMC on January 19, 2009 at 7:00 pm.
Our speaker this year is Jerry Matchett, General Manager of Staples Office Supply Store, here in Cedar Rapids. He as served on many boards and has been involved with many community activities. Mr. Matchett was born Tuskegee, Alabama, but shortly moved to South Dakota. As a young teenager, he moved to Ames, Iowa. Mr. Matchett has a Bachelor of Liberal Studies-Management, Psychology and Commutation from the University of Northern Iowa.
Plan to attend this year's celebration - to be inspired by Mr. Matchett; to hear the music of the Gospel Choir of Johnson School of the Arts and of Mt. Zion's Men's Choir and of St. Paul's Music Ministry; to celebrate the new honoree of the "Who is My Neighbor Award" - and all to be done as a reminder of the enduring contributions of Dr. King.
Who's My Neighbor Award
In the January, 2000, the first Percy and Lileah Harris "Who is My Neighbor" Award was presented to Dr. and Mrs. Harris and all future awards will carry their name. The award plaque reads "In recognition of a lifelong faith commitment to living in harmony with others and to promoting equality and social justice in the community.” This year’s award will be the tenth award presented at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration at St. Paul’s.
"Who is My Neighbor" is based on the story of the Good Samaritan Jesus told in response to the question, "Who is my neighbor?" Dr. King also used the story of the Good Samaritan in his final speech in Memphis just before he was assassinated in 1968.
The recipient of the award needs to meet these criteria:
1. Acts out of a religious faith base
2. Is caring and compassionate.
3. Is community oriented.
4. Is a good neighbor to all.
5. Lives within Linn County.

But, really, January 9Th had much more significance than the birthday of our 37Th President of the United States.
It was January 9, 1949. Tommy and LaVerne Tucker were married in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They had met on a blind date, while both were students at Coe College. Today, January 9, 2009, Tommy and LaVerne Tucker celebrate their 60Th wedding anniversary. They will celebrate the event with a trip to Hawaii this month.
In 1958, Tommy founded Tommy Tucker Realty Co. Tommy Tucker Realty Co. celebrated its 50Th anniversary as a company, last year. Tommy entered the real estate profession in 1955.
LaVerne retired from real estate at the end of 2007.
Tommy Tucker has been recognized by the Cedar Rapids Association of Realtors (CRAAR) and the National Association of Realtors (NAR) as a REALTOR® Emeritus. He is a past president of the CRAAR and the Iowa Association of Realtors. He also served as a national vice president of NAR.
The Iowa Realtor Foundation offers the I.L. "Tommy" Tucker Scholarship. Mr. Tucker, along with other Realtors, help establish the University of Northern Iowa Real Estate Education Program.
Today, we sincerely wish our founder, Tommy Tucker, and his wife, a Happy 60Th Wedding Anniversary. Congratulations Dad & Mom! Robin Tucker
